A Fibonacci Toccata

A thrilling organ composition shaped by the Fibonacci sequence, blending mathematical elegance with expressive power in a joyful, virtuosic offering of praise.

About This Piece

A Fibonacci Toccata is a kinetic and intricately crafted work for organ, drawing inspiration from the mathematical elegance of the Fibonacci sequence (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13). Rapid bursts of notes spiral outward with organic logic, suggesting both natural growth and God's created order. Rhythm and articulation take precedence over harmonic density, allowing the piece's angular lines and shifting meters to shine with crystalline precision. Though mathematically rooted, the music pulses with emotion—driven, joyful, and full of purposeful energy. The final moments bring a surprise: a radiant quotation from the hymn O Filii Et Filiae, followed by a resounding C-major "Amen." Brilliantly crafted and deeply expressive, A Fibonacci Toccata is both a technical showcase and a joyful offering of praise to God—inviting the listener into a world where logic and inspiration intertwine.

Notes from the Composer

The c-minor Fibonacci Toccata is based upon the following sequence: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13. The theme is introduced with no more than one note sounding at any one time. Then follows a developmental section and the inversion of the sequence, echoing the theme across all five manuals. A second theme is introduced in the pedal against the Fibonacci sequence while the toccata soars above it all (and later in canon). After much development and an extravagant pedal solo, the piece closes with a quote from the last phrase of O Filii Et Filiae and a thunderous C-Major "Amen."
